The average rough sleeping will walk up to 15 miles a day, just to access basic necessities.
Living without a safe place for self-care, nourishment and support means that those human needs are met in wide-ranging places, whether that’s to get something to eat, a place for a shower, somewhere to change clothes and even go to the toilet, things that most of us find in a single accommodation, for someone on the streets every “room” is a different building and every building is on a different street.
Add to this that when you calculate the daily allowance for someone over 25 living with the sole income of Universal Credit, as is often the case for a person without an address, which equates to just under £14 a day, the idea of spending £5.25 on transport, when you have legs and the ability to walk, is out of the question.
This is the very real challenge many of the people we support have to deal with every day.
