The Story of Andrew *

Andrew had lived happily with his mum for many years, he had regular, physical, outdoor work and undiagnosed ADHD. Andrew’s mum fell ill later in life and was moved to a care home. As the tenancy was in her name, once she left, he was evicted.

Andrew has good friends, one of whom offered him a place to stay, even though their property was already overcrowded. When this became untenable, his friend recommended he come to us.

The rapid change in circumstance had a damaging effect on his mental health and he became unable to work, temporarily turning to alcohol to quiet his troubled mind.

Once through our door, we helped him access universal credit, emergency funds and referred him to several housing options including a private landlord who offered him a tenancy.

A year later he was served another eviction notice due to complications with his benefits, and returned to us for support. We provided a bed in the Winter Night Shelter and worked with the landlord and DWP to clear up the complications.

Andrew searched for and found his own housing and left the night shelter. We still see him on the occasions that he needs a food bank voucher, he is engaging with mental health services.
