Did you know?

The average rough sleeping will walk up to 15 miles a day, just to access basic necessities.

Living without a safe place for self-care, nourishment and support means that those human needs are met in wide-ranging places, whether that’s to get something to eat, a place for a shower, somewhere to change clothes and even go to the toilet, things that most of us find in a single accommodation, for someone on the streets every “room” is a different building and every building is on a different street.

Add to this that when you calculate the daily allowance for someone over 25 living with the sole income of Universal Credit, as is often the case for a person without an address, which equates to just under £14 a day, the idea of spending £5.25 on transport, when you have legs and the ability to walk, is out of the question.

This is the very real challenge many of the people we support have to deal with every day.

So, what's the challenge?

24 Miles. 24 Hours. £15.

This is not just a physical endurance test; it is a 24-hour immersion into the daily reality of street homelessness.

You will hike 12 miles a day, carry your own survival gear, and navigate the streets using only the cash in your pocket.

How it works

  • The Deposit: Secure your spot with a £15 registration deposit
  • The Budget: At Checkpoint 1, your £15 is handed back to you in physical cash. This is your entire survival budget for the next 24 hours, mirroring the £13.97 daily reality of living on standard Universal Credit.
  • The Route: Navigate from The Hawker Centre in Ham, through Surbiton and Tolworth, to the Epsom overnight camp, and back.
The budget: explained.

On-route Missions

The Token Run: At each checkpoint, you must collect a physical survival token, representing vital hurdles like food bank access and lost prescriptions. Present all five at the finish line to complete the challenge.

The Photo Competition: Use your journey to enter our photography competition, there are three categories: Urban Reality, Green Spaces, and Hidden Safety. Remember: capture spaces, not faces.

Urban Reality: We are looking for something that sparks the reality of urban life. Ideas: something abstract, strong lines, hostile architecture, graffiti

Green Spaces: We have a beautiful borough full of green spaces, capture something unusual and striking. Ideas: incongruous items, wildlife, close-ups, vistas.

Hidden Safety: We’re looking for the spaces of sanctuary in the borough, somewhere you might feel safe in desperate times. Ideas: bridges, hollows, stair wells, alleys.

Every entry will be viewed and judged by KCAH staff to create a shortlist of 3 entries per category. The shortlist will be printed and displayed in the drop-in reception with the people we support voting for a favourite from each category. The winners will be announced after 1 month and their picture framed and permanently displayed in reception.
