Not to jump on the bandwagon or state the obvious too much, but… it’s been hot hasn’t it? I imagine there’s been slightly more going in to the office lately, a strict schedule of windows open, curtains closed at home as the sun makes its way across the sky, and to some extent, a desire to move as little as possible.
Then there’s the sweat… cold showers twice a day or standing in a cold bath to cool your feet just before bed. Hot weather, while glorious (for those that like it), seems to bring a whole new set of personal admin.
Just this week, I have contacted a company that produces portable hygiene products: full-body wipes that provide the function of a shower, rinse-free shampoo caps and what they call “intimate” wipes for the delicate areas.
My pitch for a regular donation from them is under consideration and I really hope it blossoms into an ongoing partnership. Finding generous and willing companies that align with the aims of our charity is so important to broadening and strengthening the support we offer.
Classically, people think more about homelessness during the winter. We all know what it is to feel cold and alone at a time when families and friends are coming together, but every season brings its own set of challenges.
I read recently that between 1994 and 2003 the chance of a 30+ degree day was 3.3% whereas between 2014 and 2023 that chance doubled to 5.9% and with 3 days already this year breaking 30 degrees that trend is looking to continue.
What does this mean for the people experiencing homelessness? Again, not to state the obvious but, these are very dangerous conditions: heatstroke, dehydration, sunburn, but let’s consider dignity.
It’s not so easy to walk into a coffee shop and ask for a cold glass of water if you’re feeling self-conscious about your personal hygiene, whether that’s your body or your clothes.
Which is exactly why securing products like these full body wipes is so much more than a cosmetic luxury. It is a vital tool for restoring a baseline of self-worth.
As we head towards another hot summer, please think about what we can do as a community to help people with no easy access to the resources needed to keep cool and hydrated.
