The Story of Brian *

Brian first came to us, after 2 years of homelessness, having left his previous accommodation after being assaulted by another tenant. He had found shelter in a shed and was happy there, initially asking only for assistance with a medical issue, which we offered and he accepted.

A few years later, Brian arrived with a friend, having now been homeless for 6 years. With the help of his friend he was able to ask for help with his housing and again, a medical issue. The experience of homelessness had taken a toll on him mentally and physically yet he maintained he was “doing alright”.

Brian was encouraged to register with a new GP, apply for benefits for the first time, and approach the council with a homelessness application. At 62, he was eligible for sheltered accommodation.

Brian, his friend and KCAH continued to work together to complete the bureaucratic processes required, and after 7 months of bidding on the housing register, he was offered a studio flat which he has now moved into.

Brian’s resilience in the face of a protacted experience of homelessness is remarkable, and the fact that he has, and can build on, a network of supportive people speaks to his navigation of the experience with dignity.
