Paul is on leave this week, our brilliant volunteer Jude, has given us his thoughts on KCAH.
My experience with KCAH started well-before I had even considered walking through the office doors as a volunteer. My mum has been involved as a trustee and volunteer at the night shelter since her retirement and would relay all sorts of interesting tales from her experiences and would tell me about the work KCAH does for the community.
After my mother’s enthusiastic words and the admittedly selfish motive to boost my CV, I found myself touring around the offices, meeting the team from all areas of the charity. From the warm environment in the bridge to the patience and professionalism elsewhere, I felt a strong sense of altruism throughout the building.
I chose to begin volunteering under Paul, in the marketing and communications department. When I met with Paul, I instantly felt welcomed and was provided autonomy with the impact I could have.
In my short time here, I have had the opportunity to contribute towards the planning of the summer fundraising event (big things coming) and help brainstorm and create social media posts, learning about what KCAH is trying to achieve with this work.
The most valuable thing I can take from my experience so far is a deeper understanding of why homelessness is rising and learning how instrumental charities like KCAH are in bridging the gap between failing government policies and the communities experiencing the real impacts.
