The Story of Shelley *

Shelley was 19 when she first came to us, she had suffered mental abuse at home for a long time and left to stay with a friend in their student accommodation, a temporary and ultimately untenable solution.
From there she moved into another friend’s place and requested a referral to stay at the YMCA, where she remained for 9 months and enrolled in University to complete a degree.
Student loans and finances can be complicated, and she found herself unable to pay the rent, despite going through the correct channels for rent relief and we supported her with proof of her period of homelessness.
This was a very stressful time of uncertainty, during which she continued to attend lectures and assessments, fearing that the stress would impact her academic performance.
6 months later, Shelley returned. The stresses had grown too much for her and she had dropped out of university. We helped her re-access benefits and referred her to a private landlord.
She accepted a room and signed a tenancy agreement where she still lives today.
