The Story of Rajan *
Go back eight years and Rajan was 20 years old and living with his parents. The family were served with an eviction notice. He was working part-time and was looking for housing advice. We referred him to a hostel but he didn’t attend the interview and we lost touch.
Five years later Rajan came back to see us. Since our last interaction he had spent a year in prison. During his time there he had accrued significant rent arrears and was again being evicted. We worked with him to open a bank account but once again he disappeared.
Last year Rajan returned again. He had been hospitalised for several months and again was facing eviction due to rent arrears accrued in his time in hospital. We offered him a bed at the Winter Night Shelter and he chose to stay with friends.
Rajan’s life entered a period of chronic chaos after that first eviction, a period which could well continue to this day. Our door is always open to him and we will meet him where he is and work from there.
